The Outer Core

• The outer core is a liquid layer located below the mantle.

• It is believed to be composed mostly of molten iron, along with nickel and some lighter elements.

• Convection of molten metals within the outer core is believed to be the source of Earth’s magnetic field.

The outer core is Earth’s only liquid layer.
